Early numbers show Cash for Clunkers to be successful
KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Nearly 700,000 clunkers were traded in for cash during the government's rebate program.
The U.S. Transportation Secretary is calling cash for clunkers "wildly successful." He says nearly 700,000 clunkers are off the road, and the government gave out more than $2.88-billion to replace those with new, fuel efficient cars.
In Washington, $56-million was requested for the program, and $37.5-million in Oregon.
Government data shows that clunkers got about 16 miles to the gallon, compared to the newly purchased cars that get 25 mpg. That's a 58% improvement.
The top three new cars people bought are the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Toyota Camry.
