Two recent house fires caused by juveniles

YAKIMA, Wash-- Investigators with the Yakima Fire Department believe several recent fires were started by kids. Both the Rock Avenue and Hathaway fires caused significant property damage and were started by people playing with matches.

One of the teens involved in the Rock Ave fire will be charged with reckless burning, which is a class "C" felony.

Ron Melcher with Yakima's Fire and Life Safety Division said an alarming number of fires are started by kids, around ten percent in our area.

"Most children that die in fires, a lot of the times it's because they've been playing with fire. You know this is a tragedy waiting to happen," said Melcher.

Melcher said many of the fires they go to are preventable. The Yakima Fire Department has a Juvenile Fire Stoppers program. It aims to help kids before they cause a serious or deadly fire.
