Capitol Theatre celebrates expansion project at ground breaking
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Capitol Theatre formally broke ground Tuesday morning on a new production center.
City leaders, theatre management, and supporters of the expansion project made the honorary dig for the first phase of the multi-million dollar plan.
Steve Caffery is CEO of the Capitol Theatre, he says the project is an essential step just to keep up the shows currently playing on stage and those they want to bring to Yakima.
"It's critical not only to be able to sustain what we can do now which is bring in the big shows, [...] but it's also critical that we provide these venues and ways for us to grow into the future otherwise we're going to die," he said.
Construction began last month on the production center, which will allow bigger shows to play at the current theatre. A new 500-seat theatre will also be built to hold smaller shows, it will be located on top of the production center.
