Kennewick, wash. - A traffic stop in downtown Kennewick Monday afternoon turns deadly. A 39-year old man is dead after a Kennewick police officer shot him.
The suspect's name is Christopher Villareal. Officer Lee Cooper shot him at the corner of Kennewick Avenue and Dayton Street near Key Bank.
Officer Cooper is recovering at Kennewick General Hospital from a leg injury caused when Villareal rammed his 3,000 pound Lexus into Cooper's police motorcycle.
Police say the situation was life threatening and officer Cooper was in a situation where he had to shoot the suspect or risk his own safety. Police have not yet released how many shots were fired, but are continuing to investigate the situation an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
