One family's struggle with Alzheimers

Posted: Updated:

In Washington State alone there are 100 thousand people with Alzheimers. Today I met with one woman who has a story about the struggles her family went through when dealing with the disease.

"The hardest part is that my kids don't get to know my mom," Thornhill said.

Candy's mother Valerie Poland passed away four months ago, it was the day before Mothers Day.

"We told her to go.. It's fine to go, we're all going to be fine, and she finally took her last breath on her terms."

It was her last breath after nine years of struggling with the disease It's a disease more than five million adults have in this country, a number Candy says is devastating.

"Unlike cancer where you can sometimes get treatment, this disease.. it's terminal."

The family tried to make Valerie's last years enjoyable They took trips together and even went on a family cruise.

"We have good days and bad days."

But whether it's a good or bad day, Candy says they all face it together..
