Health overhaul includes Cantwell Medicare measure

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A health care overhaul bill being considered in the Senate includes an amendment by Sen. Maria Cantwell to change the way doctors serving Medicare patients are paid.

The Washington state Democrat says her measure is intended to reward doctors for providing high quality care. She says the current system penalizes Washington and other states by rewarding quantity of medical services performed rather than quality.

Cantwell and 27 other senators sent a letter last week to President Barack Obama urging the Medicare change. Montana Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, agreed to include the measure Tuesday in a health care bill the Finance panel is considering. Cantwell is a member of the panel.
