Body found in waste water lagoon identified

PASCO, Wash. -- The Franklin County Coroner has identified the body found in an old settling pond at Ainsworth and Rd. 36 in the Port of Pasco. It's been identified as 27-year old Alexander Valencia, of Los Angeles, CA.

Valencia's body was found floating in a fenced pond Tuesday afternoon by a Port of Pasco employee. The coroner says he died by asphyxiation due to drowning, and has ruled his death as an accident. The coroner says the body was severely decomposed and had likely been in the water for at least five days. He was able to identify Valencia by his tattoos.

Investigators believe Valencia wrecked a 1999 Jeep Cherokee he was riding near the lagoon five days before his body was found.

Police say the investigation and evidence show that he accidentally drowned after climbing a six foot tall fence that surrounded the pond...while running away from the accident.

Valencia had been staying with a cousin in the area for almost two weeks. The coroner says alcohol was involved.
