KENNEWICK, Wash. - Mid-Columbia Libraries launched the first annual Big Read event. The Big Read event took place Thursday night at the Kennewick Library and everyone who attended received a free book, The Maltese Falcon. The event also offered refreshments, live jazz music and antique cars.

The Big Read is a nationwide event that focuses on inspiring people to pick up a good book.   "The National Endowment for the Arts wanted to bring books back into the heart of American life and that's what we want to do too. Having books at the center of peoples life, is very important to us, and bringing the reading back," said Kyle Cox, Services Director for Mid-Columbia Libraries.

The Big Read will last through the month of October and will offer book discussions , live Falcon events, and writer's workshops.
