YFD says old mill fire highlights department's low staffing
YAKIMA, Wash. - The fire department will report to the city council Tuesday night about their response to the fire at the old mill site.
Chief Charlie Hines explained the challenge the department had last month responding to the four-alarm fire at Yakima Resources.
He said this fire revealed an ongoing staffing problem they face during Monday's city media briefing.
"This was obviously a high profile incident that highlighted our lack of firefighter resources," he said. "Actually, every week we run out of firefighters multiple times and the city is virtually left unprotected. "
The fire chief also said the city saved an estimated $1.1 billion from potential damage because of where on the site the fire started.
