PASCO, Wash. - Traffic is now flowing in both directions after two vehicles exploded into flames on Interstate 182 off of Sam Vopentest bridge between Richland and Pasco. Police say the driver of an older Suburban was trying to exit off the right-hand side of the shoulder when she noticed she was having mechanical problems. As she slowed down a Chrysler with three children ran right into it. Instantly booth cars exploded sending large smoke plumes into the air.
Rescue crews quickly arrived to the scene and took all five victims including three children to the hospital. Two of the victims were severely injured and were rushed to Kadlec Medical Center. Sgt. Wilbur says accidents like this are uncommon. "It's fairly unusual to have both cars result in a fire like they did. There are times when cars burst into flames but it's not common," said Sgt. Roger Wilbur.
The two-car accident had traffic backed up for more than three hours. Police say this accident caused three other minor accidents, two on Highway 240 and one on 395 South bound.
