Central is #1 in Region, #2 Nationally

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- The ascent up the Division II football rankings continues for Central Washington University, as the Wildcats are now ranked second in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II national poll and are ranked first in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four ranking. Both polls were released Monday.

Central is now the lone undefeated team in the Super Region Four, which includes the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Lone Star Conference, and the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Wildcats, 8-0 and 3-0 in GNAC play, have won 14 straight regular-season games dating back to last September.

CWU earned a last-second win over Western Oregon, 23-21, at Battle in Seattle VII at Qwest Field this past Saturday. Their victory, combined with a 33-21 home loss by then-top-ranked Abilene Christian (Texas) against West Texas A&M, allowed the Wildcats to move into the super region's top spot and the number two national ranking. Central had been ranked third nationally and second in the super region last week, and only North Alabama is listed ahead of Central Washington in this week's AFCA national poll.

Behind the Wildcats in this week's Super Region Four ranking are Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Western State, Abilene Christian, and Washburn (Kan.) in second through fifth, respectively. Midwestern State (Texas), Texas A&M-Kingsville, Central Missouri, Angelo State (Texas), and Tarleton State (Texas) round out the top 10. The top six teams in the final regional ranking, to be released following the conclusion of the regular season on Nov. 8, will qualify for the 24-team NCAA Division II championship field.

Central Washington plays its final regular-season home game this Saturday (Oct. 24) as the Wildcats take on Humboldt State at Tomlinson Stadium. The game against the 4-3 Lumberjacks will be the annual Homecoming game and Senior Day for CWU, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
