First piece in place at Triton Sail Park in Richland
RICHLAND, Wash. -- The Port of Benton now has the first piece of its future Triton Sail Park in place.
Workers lowered the conning tower from the U.S.S. Triton into the ground and encased it in concrete Friday morning. Eventually, the vessel's entire sail will be on display. The sail is the tower-like structure that sits on top of the submarine, which houses the periscope, radar, and communication masts.
The Triton was the first vessel to circumnavigate the world underwater back in 1960. Port of Benton workers said the Triton Sail Park is still a couple year away from being completed and open to tourists.
