ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Ellensburg football is the picture of perfection right now. The Central Washington Wildcats are 9-0 and Ellensburg High is 8-0.
The Wildcats visit the Dixie State Red Storm in Utah on Saturday, in the first of their final 2 regular season games. With a win Saturday, the Wildcats can wrap up a conference championship and a playoff spot.
Last year, it was the Wildcats offense that pushed them forward but this year it is a defense that ranks 4th in Division II.
And with all the wins more and more of the 17,000 people in Ellensburg have turned their attention to Central.
"It's so much different than last year," said Quarterback Ryan Robertson. "Last year, we were a great team but this year it's like people care a little bit more. I think it's just been baby steps as we keep going. The more we keep winning and the better the football program is, the more buzz on campus. The buzz around town, it goes up and up."
"Right now, we sit 9-0," said Central Head Coach Blaine Bennett. "It's easy to talk about the playoffs, conference championships ... But nothing will come about if we don't take care of business this week. "
