City prepares for more budget study sessions

YAKIMA, Wash. - The city council plans to continue its efforts to finalize the 2010 budget this week with more study sessions, according to city staff at Monday's media briefing.

There will be a study session scheduled for more than three hours Tuesday morning so that they can continue to review the outline created by city management.

Dave Zabell is the assistant city manager for Yakima and says the council is on track to adopt a budget by mid-December but admits it is much more of a challenge for them this year.

"We're cuttin' meat, we're not trimming fat out of this budget," he said.  "That's been done long ago and we're cuttin' into programs, cuttin' into the ability to provide, maintain level of service."

City staff told KNDO they are willing to hold study sessions every Tuesday morning if that is what it takes to stay on track for the city's deadline of a finalized budget by the end of the year.

The study session is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. inside council chambers at city hall.
