Franklin County Sheriff's detectives find van rigged to steal gas

Posted: Updated:
PASCO, Wash.-- Criminals are stealing gas and leaving you high and dry.

Franklin County Sheriff's detectives discover a van rigged up to steal diesel fuel from 24 hour stations.

A beat up van, but it was supposed to hold precious cargo.

Here's how it's done; a 275 gallon tank connects to a hose. Drop it down to a reservoir and suck up the diesel.

It's been a growing problem in yakima. But it's the first attempt here in over a year. And the van, surprised even law enforcement.

Detectives found this van before they think any damage was done. All the gas stolen can mean thousands of dollars lost each day, and that means high prices for customers.

They do have two suspects they are looking at in connection to the attempted theft, but have yet to make any arrests. One suspect has been arrested on a non-related charge.

In the meantime, distributors and police will continue to work together, possibly changing security measures at the stations to prevent those vans from sucking them dry.
