KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Benton PUD is proposing a 4.5% rate increase. This will be the first increase in over six years.
Tonight they held a rate information meeting for Benton County residents. General Manger of the Benton PUD, Jim Sanders, says the rate increases are necessary because of power costs. He says this year alone power costs have gone up $15 million dollars. The biggest increase is in costs for Bonneville Power. Another reason for the increased rates is because the PUD is not generating enough revenue from power sales.
Power costs are expected to rise for the next two to three years. The Benton PUD will submit their proposal by the end of November. When passed, the increased rates will begin January 1, 2010.
