Sunnyside family files suit against local doctors

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A family from Sunnyside has filed a lawsuit against a team of Yakima doctors. They say the doctors did not properly treat a mother's blocked colon for days and say it ultimately ruptured and causing her death.

Attorneys for the family of 56-year-old Margie Stonemetz say doctors did not properly examined and treated the victim for more then four days. They say this happened even though there were clear warning signs that her health was at severe risk.

Stonemetz died from septic shock on June 7th, 2008. Her bowels ruptured at the hospital in the middle of the night, just hours after a gastroenterologist was finally requested. The family says he never examined her.

Her husband says he is outraged, and that his wife was in pain for days.

The lawsuit was filed in Yakima County Superior court. The charges are that the team of doctors failed to recognize warning signs of her worsening condition, and failed to request further consults that would have likely prevented her death.
