KENNEWICK, Wash-- New information about the push to change the Benton County seat from Prosser to Kennewick.
Retired Judge Fred Staples is confident he has enough signatures this time to bring the measure to the ballot. Now that November's election has been certified with more than 40,000 people casting ballots, Staples knows how many signatures he needs to keep moving forward.
"That means I had to get 1/3 of those, about 13,684 signatures. Well, I got over 20,000 signatures, so I'm pretty safe," Staples said.
County commissioners have to certify the signatures then go through a financial review of the claim. But Staples is confident he'll have the issue to voters for next year's election. He plans to deliver the signatures on Monday to the Prosser courthouse.
