YAKIMA, Wash. - City leaders were previewing the week ahead at their media briefing on Monday including the city council's budget wrap-up session on Tuesday.
During that meeting, they will decide where to make cuts and what programs to keep funding for each department. Council members explain that a lot of the final decisions for the budget will be determined at that meeting.
Kathy Coffey lead Monday's media briefing and reflected on the end of the budgeting process. She is disappointed the city will have to layoff three employees but appreciates that Yakima is better off than other communities.
"We're looking at other places across the state, cities, counties that have faced enormous layoffs," she said. "We have not, that we are proud of."
Coffey says the cuts are needed to balance the budget as required by state law. She believes they will keep the city stable through the recession.
This year, the city started using a new budgeting method and council members say it has made the process easier.
The city council will meet at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday inside council chambers to start the Budget Wrap-Up session.
