Amanda Knox counting on Italian appeals trial

Posted: Updated:

ROME (AP) - An Italian lawmaker who visited Amanda Knox in prison says the Seattle woman is counting on an appeals trial to regain her freedom, after she was convicted of killing her roommate.

An opposition lawmaker in the Chamber of Deputies, Walter Verini, spoke with Knox Tuesday as part of his monitoring of conditions in Italian prisons. He was quoted in an Italian paper, Corriere della Sera, saying Knox told him she still has faith in the Italian justice system, including the appeal her lawyers are preparing.

The former University of Washington student was convicted last week of killing British student Meredith Kercher two years ago in the apartment they shared in the university city of Perugia.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison.
