Richland, WA- This frigid weather doesn't help senior citizens who are keeping one eye on their thermostat and the other on their budget.
The Benton Franklin Community Action Committee and the City of Richland today signed up eligible seniors for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.
Currently about 200 qualifying seniors in Richland receive a 33-percent discount on their electric bills.
Energy specialist Dawn Senger says Richland and public utility districts throughout the Mid Columbia help seniors lower their energy bills year-round.
"We give out the foam insulator gaskets at no charge. We give them free shower heads that are low flow, kitchen sink aerators, and we'll also give them CFL light bulbs."
Senger says the city also gives out a booklet that includes tips on managing energy usage during the winter months.
