RICHLAND, Wash. -- Police have arrested the suspect wanted for breaking into a woman's apartment and sexually assaulting her.
Police say on December 11th, 36-year-old Karl Steven Goering Jr. was arrested on drug charges. Monday, however, the Benton County Prosecutor's Office updated his charges to first degree rape, first degree assault and first degree burglary.
The assault happened on December 5th at the Villas on Gage Boulevard in Richland. Police say Goering hit her on the head, and broke a hand and both her arms. They later created a composite sketch, and received many tips that pointed to Goering as a suspect.
After a search warrant was served on his home, investigators sent a number of pieces of evidence to the Washington State Crime Lab.
Richland police say Goering lives within walking distance of the victim's apartment, but no other information links him with the victim.
"The biggest news is we have the subject for a very brutal crime in custody," Richland Police Department's Capt. Mike Cobb said. "The neighborhood on the Gage Blvd. corridor is safer than it was before this arrest."
He is a level I sex offender with six felony counts. The level was assigned due to a sex offense he was convicted of as a juvenile.
