911 swamped with non-emergency calls

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. - The Benton County Emergency Services is receiving hundreds of 911 calls for non-emergencies. People are calling 911 for weather information, to report cars sliding off the roads and other non-emergency situations.

The Benton County Emergency Services staff says the call center is overwhelmed, causing the real emergencies to be delayed. They say the only reason to call 911 would be for a medical emergency, a fire or a threat to person or property.
