Yakima police identify murder suspect

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--Police believe Juan Valencia, also known as Evaristo Rodriguez Luna, is the man who shot Jose Mendoza Mora shortly after 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, fatally wounding him.

Investigators think the shooting, in the front yard of a duplex on the 1800 block of Greenway Street in Yakima, was drug-related.  There do not appear to be gang ties, according to YPD Capt. Rod Light.

Sgt. Mike Pollard described Valencia as being 5'6" with a medium-sized build.

Police think the 22-year-old Valencia has already left the state, along with his roommate Israel Gutierrez.

Gutierrez is described as a person of interest in the case.

Immediately after the shooting, police detained two men who later were released.  Pollard said those men were not Valencia and Gutierrez, adding the original two men have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Police consider Valencia and Gutierrez armed and dangerous.
