Severed foot found in Terrace Heights Landfill stumps investigators
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A suspicious foot is found in the Terrace Heights Landfill, investigators thought it was human, turns out it's the foot of a bear cub. It stumped Sheriff deputies, even the Yakima County Coroner.
If you look at photos from the National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory it becomes clear why, a black bear cub's paw is the same shape and size as a human. Plus, the foot found was decomposed and with no hair. After the coroner took the foot, he had to call an anthropologist in Seattle, then dissect the foot to confirm it wasn't human.
"We're very relieved because to have the entire detective division go out and rummage through a whole bunch of garbage is not something they wanted to do today," said Sgt. George Town, Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
The dump was roped off as a crime scene Friday night, but is now back to normal production. Sgt. Town said this isn't the first bear foot ever found at the landfill, it happened 15 years ago as well. He said the only human remains ever discovered in a landfill, in this area, were at the Kittitas County landfill.
