Just a day after a devastating earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, people are scrambling to provide disaster relief. Those who want to make an immediate contribution have been given a quick and easy way to do so. By texting "HAITI" to "90999" a donation of $10 will be made to the Red Cross and charged to your cell phone bill.
You can also donate $5 do the United Way by texting Haiti to 864833 (UNITED). Checks can be make out to United Way and mailed to United Way Worldwide, P.O. Box 630568, Baltimore, MD 21263-0568. The memo line should include "United Way Disaster Recovery Fund"
Other contributions can be made on the Red Cross, Mercy Corps and United Way web sites.
As of Thursday morning, the mobile texting has raised more than 3 million dollars for Haiti relief efforts. There are estimated 3 million people affected by the earthquake and aid is slow going because of the amount of devastation affecting telecommunications and transportation.
Wyclef Jean is also providing a means for people to text relief through his organization Yele. Text "YELE" to "501501" to donate $5 to the cause. According to MTV.com, the donations have reached 1 million dollars so far.
