Watch out for motorcycles in warmer weather

Posted: Updated:

NORTH OF GRANGER--Emergency personnel from several different Lower Valley agencies responded to a car versus motorcycle collision Saturday morning.

It happened at the intersection of Van Belle Road and Yakima Valley Highway just outside of Granger.

Police say Marco Muniz was heading towards town when he pulled out and hit Barbara Trosvik of Zillah.  She was riding her motorcycle east on the highway.

Trosvik suffered leg injuries and was released from Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital later that day.

When it's nice outside, people will ride their bikes.  One first responder believes the lack of motorcycles on the roads during the winter months may have caught Muniz off guard when he came across one Saturday.

"This kind of weather the bikes get out; people forget there's motorcycles out there," Terry Carter, Yakima County Fire District 5, said.  "They're a smaller unit, people won't see them even if they've got a light on."

Especially in warm weather like the Yakima Valley saw Saturday, Carter asks drivers to be aware of their surroundings.

The accident slowed traffic on Yakima Valley Highway for about an hour.

Muniz will be charged for failure to yield.
