History makers in the making

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. – Most years, Black History Month is a chance to reflect on figures of the past but this year some are looking to honor those whose contributions will be fully appreciated in the future.

TheGrio.com has compiled a list of 100 people who are "History Makers in the Making" from the fields of business, politics, sports, science, and the arts. The website is in partnership with NBC News and will feature members of its list on the network throughout the month.

James Parks is with the Yakima County chapter of the NAACP. He says he applauds the idea but worries that people will forget about important historical figures.

"You gotta know what took place and why it took place," he said. "In order to, you know, keep it from happenin'."

The word "grio" refers to a storyteller from Western Africa who tells the history and oral tradition of a family or village, according to the website.
