Haiti relief donors qualify for immediate tax relief
KENNEWICK, Wash. - People who give to charities providing earthquake relief to Haiti can claim these donations on their 2009 tax return. The IRS is giving an immediate tax relief for people who've donated by cash, text messages, checks and debit or credit cards. The donations must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
This new law is only available to taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return. The donations must be made to charities after January 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010 to be eligible. Nancy Conter, tax adviser, says if you plan on donating or have donated to a charity make sure you keep a record of the donation.
Taxpayers have the option of deducting these contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns, but not both.
