YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The Washington state Department of Ecology has fined a central Washington hops extraction facility $30,000 for long-term mishandling of dangerous wastes.
Ecology said in a statement Thursday that John I. Haas Inc. was cited numerous times between 2004 and 2009 for mismanaging highly flammable and corrosive chemicals used in laboratory and cleaning processes.
The department says a citizen complaint prompted an October 2009 inspection, when 17 violations were found.
The company has 30 days to pay the penalty or file an appeal with the state Pollution Control Hearings Board. A company spokesman did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
The Yakima Valley produces more than 70 percent of the nation's hops, which are used in brewing beer.
