Commissioners weary of new tax bill

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.--  Legislators in Olympia are close to passing a bill allowing counties and cities to raise taxes without a vote

House Bill 3179 narrowly passed the House. It would give county commissioners the option of raising the sales tax one tenth of a percent to go to local public safety.

But some commissioners think politicians are just trying to avoid being responsible for new taxes.

"I suspect the legislators in Olympia feel to some degree like giving council-matic authority for tax increases to local commissioners is giving us more flexibility," says Franklin County commissioner, Brad Peck. "Other people would argue that it's simply passing the buck for the responsibility of balancing the budget."

The bill now moves to the Senate for a vote.
