A group of three Tri-Citians is threatening to sue President Barack Obama and the Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu. The group sent a letter to Washington DC announcing their intent.
In the letter, a local group headed by Bob Ferguson and Bill Lampson are challenging the fed's decision to get rid of the Yucca Mountain project, the proposed final resting place for Hanford waste.
The group says the decision violates the nuclear waste policy act. They also say: "The administration and the DOE have broken the trust with the Tri-cites Communities. The DOE has 'no plan b' as to where to permanently dispose of the Hanford nuclear waste."
The Department of Energy had this response: "The Department is confident it has full legal authority to take all the steps it has taken regarding Yucca Mountain, including beginning the process to withdraw the pending nuclear regulatory commission application. Nothing in the threatened litigation has altered that view."
Both Ferguson and Lampson refused to add any comment today.
