HIV cases rising among Hispanics, including Yakima County
YAKIMA, Wash. – HIV cases among Hispanics are on the rise across Washington including Yakima County, according to new numbers made available Thursday in the Yakima Health District's February report.
The increase in the county represents a significant proportion of the total cases in the state.
Washington state has 17,276 cases of HIV as of last year. According to the monthly report, 10 percent of those cases are in the Hispanic community. Six percent of those cases fall within Yakima County.
Continued education and services is needed in that community, the report says. HIV rates are almost double in Hispanics compared to Caucasians with the majority of infections in men.
The Health District says one of the challenges in finding new cases in the Hispanic community is providing the resources needed including testing and management of the disease.
