Family of man who shot school teacher left reeling
ELLENSBURG--Saturday is another sad day for the family of Tacoma-area school teacher Jennifer Paulson, who was shot to death Friday.
It's an equally sad day for the family of the man who shot her.
Police say Ellensburg man Jed Waits had stalked Paulson for several years since the two were students at Seattle Pacific University.
She'd obtained a restraining order against Waits, but he violated it and allegedly shot Paulson Friday morning outside the elementary school where she taught special ed.
Waits' father lives in Ellensburg.
He expressed his sympathy to the victim's family.
"We didn't know this was coming," Dennis Waits told KING 5 reporter Glenn Farley. "We're as shocked as you are. To be quite honest, I wish that he used the gun on us instead of [Paulson]. That's how terrible we feel."
Waits was killed in a shoot-out with Pierce County Sheriff's Deputies.
Ellensburg police say Waits had one run-in with the law a few years ago on an unrelated matter.
