Yakima Valley Red Cross Real Heroes honored at annual breakfast
YAKIMA, Wash. – Ten people were honored as Real Heroes by the Yakima Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross Thursday at the Yakima Convention Center during the organization's annual fundraising breakfast.
A few hundred people attended the event and were encouraged to make a donation to support the local chapter.
Each year there is a call for nominations from members of the community to honor heroes in six categories. A panel of judges then reviews the nominees and selects the recipients.
Don Whitehouse works for the Washington State Department of Transportation and was one of the honorees at the breakfast. He says the award means a lot to him.
"It was such an honor to be recognized because, you know, we just do what we think needs to get done," he said. "Then to come back later and to be honored like this, it really strikes deep."
