YPD Chief's trip to Washington, D.C. "very successful"

YAKIMA--Yakima Police Chief Sam Granato's back from his trip to Washington, D.C.

Granato went to the nation's capitol with hundreds of other chiefs and sheriffs from around the state.

There, they met with Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to talk about funding for early education programs.

It may sound strange for police to stump for education funding, but Granato says there's a common thread.

"You don't go to any prison in this country and talk to inmates very long to figure out that there's a common denominator [among inmates:]  dropouts from high school." Granato said.  "Many of them."

Granato said Ready by Five is a successful early education program in Yakima, but that is funded by the Gates Foundation, not the federal government.

According to Granato, Sen. Murray and President Obama have both pledged financial support for similar programs.
