Volunteers help out on Yakama reservation

Posted: Updated:

TOPPENISH--Members of a Walla Walla church take time off to help some people in need.

About sixty people from Seventh Day Adventist City Church have spent the past week doing home improvement work on the Yakama reservation.

At one home on Fort Road, crews are building a wheelchair ramp and renovating the entire bathroom.

The church used to help people in Mexico, but found there's plenty of need here in Central Washington.

"Why not do something closer to home where we can spend less money on airfare and more money [goes] directly to help the people," Doug Brown, volunteer, said.

Brown says volunteering closer to Walla Walla also allows more people to get involved.

The church group is renovating about thirty homes.  The people in those homes are either elderly, disabled or both.

Volunteers are scheduled to work on the reservation until Wednesday.
