Boy who died from drowning in a canal is identified
Police continue to investigate the death of a young boy from Prosser after he fell into a canal and drowned.
Today the County Coroner identified the 5-year-old boy as Ty Phipps.
An autopsy was performed earlier this morning and preliminary results show Ty Phipps likely died of drowning, but there were no signs of trauma.
Police say Ty was playing near a fast moving canal last night that leads into the Chandler Dam right in Prosser. He was with two other children when he fell into the water.
Both Columbia Basin Dive Rescue and Benton County Sheriff Deputies were called out.
Today we talked with members from Dive Rescue. They say this situation is more common than people realize, and everyone should know the dangers of these canals.
"Unfortunately, over the years there have been a lot of fatalities in the canals, and in this area there's almost two or three hundred miles of canals in Benton or Franklin County alone," Francis Buck from Dive Rescue said.
Francis says the water was probably around 50 degrees and moving extremely fast. He warns everyone, children and even adults, to always stay away from canals because if you fall in you probably won't be getting out.
