Health care reform impacts small businesses

Posted: Updated:

Big changes could be coming to the health care system after President Barack Obama officially signed the health care overhaul into law, but now local businesses are left wondering what is to be expected.

According to president Obama, under health care reform small businesses with fewer than 50 employees will not receive penalties if they do not offer employees health-insurance coverage, but those that do offer it could get tax credits to offset their costs.

Moreover, small business owners who don't get work provided coverage could get benefits through small business health options programs, which are state run agencies that work to find other insurance options.

As for businesses with more than 50 employees, owners will be required to offer health insurance benefits or pay penalties, but most changes will not go into effect until 2014.
