Kennewick, WA- Spring break is the perfect time to teach kids how to play it safe this summer.
At the YMCA Spring Camp today, a safety expert showed the kids what they should do when they or their friends get in trouble near the water.
The kids learned how to pull a struggling swimmer to safety. They also learned why it's important to wear a life jacket even if they know how to swim.
"Boats can tip over, or other outside surroundings can cause an unstable environment.," says YMCA Marketing Director Brittney Dugger.
The kids learned how to get in and out of a boat safely.
In telling the kids about irrigation canals, the safety expert didn't sugar coat the dangers. He told the kids about the boy who drowned last month when fell into a canal near Prosser.
