KENNEWICK, Wash.-- A day after Benton County Sheriff Larry Taylor announced he isn't running for re-election, Captain Steve Keane officially announced he wants to move up to sheriff.

Keane is the first to announce his candidacy for the position.

He did it in front of supporters that include sheriff Larry Taylor and county prosecutor Andy miller.

Keane said he wants to continue keeping gangs out of Benton County and work to strengthen the relationship with other law enforcement agencies.

Keane started as a deputy in 1989; he's been patrol captain since 2008, in charge of a $7.5 MM budget.

The primary election is August 17th.
