YAKIMA--Racers at the Yakima Speedway revs their engines for the first time this year.
About 3,000 people took in Saturday and Sunday's Apple Cup races, most coming Sunday thanks to the nice weather.
The Speedway's owner tells KNDO that rising gas prices kept some far-away racers from making the trip.
"[The cost of fuel] does hurt us for the people who travel long distance," Ted Pollock said. "We used to get them more often than we do now, but we still bring in more than $2 million worth of business into Yakima in a year's time."
Mike Longton of Moxee won the late model 100-lap race. Mel Patnode of Yakima won the super street model 60-lap race. John Rami of Yakima won the sportsman model 40-lap race.
