YAKIMA--The city of Mabton is asking for a $20,000 emergency loan to fix a computer system at the city's waste water treatment plant.
A power failure over the weekend let 370,000 gallons of raw sewage into the Yakima River because a backup generator didn't turn on or alert anyone.
The treatment plant is up and running Wednesday but the Department of Ecology said the sewage can't be cleaned up.
That means an increased risk of exposure to E. coli down river from the plant.
Mabton Mayor Angel Reyna declined our interview request, but did say the city is working with Ecology to fix the issue.
