One year since deadly rafting accident

Posted: Updated:

WAPATO--Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of a fatal rafting accident on the Yakima River.

A raft carrying four young men from the Lower Valley flipped while going over the Wapato Diversion Dam in the evening hours of May 9, 2009.

Ricardo and David de la Torre were rescued shortly after the accident, but 20-year-old Alberto Ramirez and 19-year-old Jesse Moran did not make it.

Roughly 100 people attended a memorial service for Ramirez and Moran Sunday afternoon at St. Peter Claver Church in Wapato.

Ramirez' older brother Moises told KNDO his brother is fondly remembered.

"He got along with everybody," Moises Ramirez said.  "There's not one person that expressed any malice towards him or didn't get along with him.  [He was] loved by all that knew him.  He was a genuinely good person all around."

Ramirez was president of his high school class and was attending the University of Washington when he passed away.
