Deputies investigate witness drowning in Connell

Franklin County Sheriff Deputies are investigating a witness drowning in Connell.

Four men reportedly took a paddleboat out to the Scooteney Reservoir area to go fishing when the boat filled up with water. Three men swam to shore but 39-year-old Valentin Javier Pedro from Othello drowned according to the Sheriff's Department.

"They were afraid it was going to capsize so they all abandoned the boat and they all made it to shore except one," Franklin County Coroner Dan Blasdel said.

Blasdel says the boat was only supposed to hold one person weighing less than 150 pounds.

"No life jackets," Blasdel said. "He probably didn't know how to swim. Witnesses say he went in and straight down under water and never did surface."

Blasdel says they have not found Valantin's body at this point and they're continuing to investigate.
