Locals Pitch in for Gulf Cleanup Effort

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH--The crisis on the Gulf Coast continues today.  Efforts to cover the leak this past weekend failed.  But some locals are lending a hand...or a paw to the relief effort.

Union Gap is about 27-hundred miles away from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But that isn't stopping staff at the local Petco from helping out.

Petco stores across the country are sending animal hair and fur from their grooming studios to be used to soak up the spilled oil without draining the water.

About 1,000 Petco locations are lending a hand.  Here in Union Gap, they're shipping about a box and a half of fur a day.  The fur is then stuffed into stockings and strung together to make a "boom".  It takes about 16 boxes of fur to fill one boom.

Last Saturday, the containment cell that was supposed to cover the oil leak failed.  Just this past weekend almost half-a-million more tons of oil spilled into the ocean.  The team at the Union Gap Petco recognizes this is everyone's problem.  And they're doing their part to help a hairy situation.
