Book written by White Bluffs students to be published nationally

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.--  A book written and illustrated by students at White Bluffs Elementary will be published and sold nationwide.

The second graders in Mrs. Connors' class wrote a book called "Houdini Was..." and entered a national contest by Scholastic books.  The students beat nearly 2,000 other classes, from kindergarten through 8th grade, who also wrote books to win the non-fiction category.

The class found out during a surprise assembly at the school Wednesday.

"Houdini Was..." is about the class pet hamster, Houdini.  Mrs. Connors says, "Houdini was our classroom pet and the day he passed away was a very sad day for us.  We were really struggling as a classroom family and community as to why we were so saddened by this."  The students wrote things like "Houdini was.. family," "Houdini was.. an escape artist," and "Houdini was.. an athlete."  They drew pictures about each of the things they wrote, and even hid a carrot in each picture.

As a prize, the class will get $5,000 in Scholastic Book Fair merchandise and "Houdini Was.." will be sold at Scholastic book fairs across the country.
