Yakima County Citizen Patrol gets a new car

Posted: Updated:

WAPATO--The Yakima County Block Watch is beefing up its patrols.  They've got a new patrol car for the Buena - Zillah area.

Coca-Cola of Yakima donated a Ford Taurus, giving the county's volunteers five cars to patrol areas like Terrace Heights, Parker and Buena.

The car began patrolling Friday, May 14.

Block Watch volunteers say they're making Lower Valley neighborhoods safer.

"Sheriff's deputies are spread real thin," Parker Heights Block Watch member Mark McAllister said.  "To have additional eyes and ears for their communities--our communities--is really advantageous to us."

Yakima County's citizen patrols have about 200 members and many more who participate in Block Watch.

Volunteers put about 600 miles on their 5 citizen patrol cars each month.

If you want to get involved, call the Yakima County Sheriff's Office at 509-574-2500.
