Yakima County drops three spots in rankings for auto theft
YAKIMA, Wash. -- For years Yakima County has been on a top ten list, but not one that your want to be on and that's auto thefts. But, Yakima County is making strides in the right direction.
Yakima county is well known for auto thefts, in 2008 ranking number three on the top ten list of cities with the highest vehicle theft rates. But, good news this year Yakima County's dropped to the number six spot.
Maybe it's because of educational efforts, reminding people to lock their doors or use a wheel locking device. But, it's likely due to tougher sentencing for people who steal cars. The prosecutors office says it's much easier to send someone to prison for auto theft because on new legislation. Whereas people used to be able to steal multiple cars before the law caught up with them.
Or the lower ranking may be a result of a nationwide trend, auto thefts are down by 18-percent nationally.
