YPD officer sent to hospital after scuffle with suspect
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima Police Department officer is recovering after a scuffle with a suspect sent him to the hospital. YPD is withholding the officer's name at this time, but says the injuries are minor.
Around noon on Tuesday the officer recognized a suspect with a warrant for arrest. Lt. Mike Merryman, YPD, said as the officer approached the suspect attacked him. The officer attempted to use a taser on the suspect as the suspect hit the officer over the head with an unknown object. During the scuffle the two fell over the porch railing.
The suspect ran off on foot, but was tackled by a witnessing neighbor. The officer then pepper sprayed and handcuffed the suspect.
Merryman, was not sure what the warrant was for or the suspects name. On top of the original warrant will be assault charges for attacking the officer. The officer was feeling dizzy after the arrest so he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Again Merryman said the injuries appear to be minor.
